29 Jan 2010 - Training Module on Recognition and Impact of Vorticity Maxima and Minima in Satellite Imagery This one- to one-and-a-quarter-hour module takes a closer look at vorticity maxima and minima signatures. These common features of the atmosphere indicate areas of ascending and descending circulation and atmospheric forcing and can be used to diagnose dynamic features such as the axis of maximum winds and deformation zones. This module provides insight on the analysis of these dynamic atmospheric features using Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite imagery. The module is an adaptation of Phil Chadwick's work from the series of modules in "Dynamic Feature Identification: The Satellite Palette" and was developed in collaboration with EUMETSAT. Please follow this link to start the module.

Concept of Satrep Online
|
Satrep Online is a product of EUMeTrain and sponsored by EUMETSAT. Satrep Online is developed to offer you the chance to test your own skills in the recognition of conceptual models. By combining satellite imagery with NWP a satellite image can be parsed into conceptual models which help you to get a 3d view of the state of the atmosphere on synoptic scale. Currently up to 60 of these conceptual models exist and are fully described in SatManu, the Manual of Synoptic Satellite Meteorology. The analysis of a satellite image by these conceptual models has proven not only to be useful to the forecaster but also serves as a trainingtool. The todays images offers you the latest Meteosat Second Generation satellite images in combination with a wide range of basic and derived ECMWF model fields. Through the archive past data can be accessed and studied.

Showcase

Summer warmth at the rear of the Warm Front Warm air was streaming from southeast towards the Baltic States on Friday 7 May at 12 UTC. Daytime temperatures rose near 25 degrees in White Russia and Lithuania, while just a bit north the day was cold, windy and rainy - temperature in Finland and Estonia was below 10 degrees. In the image the Thermal Front Parameter (solid blue) indicates a very strong Warm front extending along the Gulf of Finland towards the Baltic Sea. The 850 hPa wind arrows (green) show the southeasterly airflow southeast of the warm front, and easterly wind on the colder side of the front The NWP fields are overlaid on a High Resolution Visible RGB image.
